Last Sunday my friend Jennie and I attended a food photography & styling workshop at a terrific venue in the SOWA neighborhood of Boston’s South End. Farm & Fable is part cookbook and kitchenware store, part kitchen classroom. The shop hosts a monthly ‘cookbook book club’ and other food-centric events showcasing local chefs, authors and bloggers.
The workshop was hosted by two local bloggers, Betty of Le Jus d’Orange and Meg of Bread + Barrow. Our morning began with a beautiful breakfast of peach & cherry fruit salad and an assortment of very tempting Blackberry donuts. After a round of introductions, Betty walked us through a photography overview followed by an interactive photo shoot with prop and food styling direction from Meg. It was a gorgeous day – perfect for a trip to the South End Farmers Market @ SOWA to pick up some fruit and bread for lunch.
After returning to the store we took turns meeting with Betty for more hands-on camera work and watched as Meg presented a delicious mid-day meal of strawberry gazpacho, mixed greens with blackberries, gruyere quiche and citrus marinated beets. And rosé sangria!
Friends, I have so much to learn about photography and how to use my camera, but I know it’s important to develop an understanding of the fundamentals so I can capture the shots I’m looking for. This was a helpful introduction to the fundamentals of photography (aperture, shutter speed and ISO). I also really enjoyed being in such a creative environment, meeting other local bloggers and as always, finding something to snack on.
