I think everyone loves Eric Carle’s classic story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar who eats his way through apples, pears, plums, strawberries, oranges, cake, ice cream, pickles, swiss cheese, salami, lollipops, cherry pie, sausages, cupcakes and watermelon before developing a cocoon and eventually emerging as a beautiful butterfly.
I had seen a Hungry Caterpillar cake on Pinterest a while ago and knew right away I wanted to make something similar for my niece Ryleigh’s second birthday. I made a batch of Chocolate Cupcakes (and one extra large cupcake using a tiny cake tin) and a big bowl of Buttercream Frosting. Add some red and green food coloring, marshmallows and M&Ms for eyes, fruit leather strips for a mouth, antennae and little feet and ta-da, a caterpillar was born.
A very hungry caterpillar for a very happy two-year-old. Happy Birthday, Ryleigh Rose!
